In the wake of Barbie’s blockbuster success at the box office, speculations about a potential sequel featuring Margot Robbie reprising her role as the iconic character have been circulating.
Robbie appeared to quash any hopes for a follow-up to the Greta Gerwig-directed film. Speaking to the Press, Robbie stated, “I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
Barbie achieved remarkable financial success, grossing over $1.4 billion at the box office. Reflecting on the film’s triumph, Robbie emphasized the significance of original films making a substantial impact. “It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake,”
According to Deadline, Robbie said, “It can be totally original. It can still be big given the big budget to do that. And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants, which is, you know, I think a misconception that a lot of people still have.”
Robbie underscored the importance of Barbie’s success, envisioning a future where filmmakers can pursue significant original ideas with adequate budgets.
