Warner Bros. has considered the prospect of showing Greta Gerwig’s Barbie at the Cannes Film Festival.
However, according to Variety‘s report the film is more likely to be released closer to Barbie’s Malibu home. Even though the company will not attend the festival, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will visit France.
Although the movie been kept under wraps, the adaptation will feature several versions of Barbie and Ken. Ryan Gosling plays the Ken to Robbie’s Barbie, while Will Ferrell plays the CEO of Mattel. Other cast members include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, Emerald Fennell, and Emma Mackey.
“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t,'” Robbie told British Vogue.
Barbie and her pink convertible will hit the big screen on July 21, 2023.
