Wednesday showrunners reveal why Addams was chosen as the main character

Al Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of the popular Netflix series Wednesday, have explained why the morosely named Addams was chosen as the main character.
In a THR interview, Gough said that Wednesday’s character hadn’t received much attention up to that point. “It was a character that we all really loved, and nobody had spent a lot of time with. And it’s a character we’d only seen really as a 10-, 11-, 12-year-old, who is part of a family and would have a funny line in the scene, but we didn’t know much about her”.

Gough elucidated. In fact, the new series, which is an adaptation of The Addams Family series, could have developed as a solo showcase for any member of the family, including Wednesday’s parents, Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), Wednesday’s younger brother, and even the commanding, stoic butler Lurch (George Burcea).
He also highlighted the rationale behind deciding to tell her story as a teenager saying, “Her sort of fearlessness and her ability to always be herself with something that was interesting, and we thought, well, “What if she was a teenage girl? And then what if you took her out of the family and put her in boarding school, which is ostensibly a new family? How would she react?”
Millar went on to emphasise the value of respecting The Addams Family’s history as a renowned cartoon and movie series that has endured for many years. Giving a “shoutout to the fans” was one of the show’s objectives.

Wednesday is currently streaming on Netflix.
