Christopher Nolan To Receive BFI Fellowship

Christopher Nolan, acclaimed filmmaker behind the blockbuster Oppenheimer, is set to be honored with the BFI Fellowship. This prestigious award, the highest recognition by the UK’s leading film organization, will be presented at the BFI Chair’s Dinner in London on February 14, 2024.

Hosted by BFI Chair Tim Richards, the ceremony will be followed by an In Conversation event at BFI Southbank on February 15, as well as a special introduction to Nolan’s hit film Tenet at BFI IMAX, with public tickets available. Nolan’s visit will also include a tour of the BFI National Archive’s Conservation Centre.

According to Deadline, Nolan, whose films have collectively earned 11 Academy Awards and a staggering $6.1 billion worldwide, expressed his excitement, stating, “I am thrilled and honored to be accepting a BFI Fellowship from an organization so dedicated to preserving both cinema’s history as well as its future.”

BFI Chair Tim Richards commended Nolan’s unparalleled contribution, saying, “Christopher Nolan is one of the greatest filmmakers of the 21st century, creating hugely popular movies that have grossed over $6 billion worldwide. His movies are all made for the big screen to challenge and entertain audiences around the world.”

Richards also highlighted Nolan’s commitment to the industry, emphasizing his support in preserving celluloid through initiatives like The Film Foundation and the Morf Foundation for the BFI’s photochemical work.

Nolan joins the esteemed ranks of previous BFI Fellowship recipients, including Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Tilda Swinton, and Ridley Scott. The recognition solidifies Nolan’s legacy as a cinematic maestro and a dedicated advocate for the preservation and evolution of the film industry.
