The Marvels’ Hovers Around $6M As Stars Make Way To Cinemas

Marvel Studios’ sequel, The Marvels, garnered approximately $6.5 million in Thursday night previews, and Disney is set to release the official figures soon.

Concerns loom that this $200 million-budgeted sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, the highest-grossing female superhero movie, might have the lowest start for a Marvel Studios film in the U.S., potentially below The Incredible Hulk. Despite tracking adjustments from $80 million to $60 million, there is apprehension that The Marvels could open at $40 million or less.

Critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are at 61% fresh, but the RT audience score is higher at 85% which is promising, however, the die-hards always come out on Thursday night. Thursday night PostTrak exits from ComScore/Screen Engine were severe for general audiences at 3.5 stars, but 4 1/2 stars from parents and 5 stars from kids under 12.

That said, kids and parents combined only repped 9% of last night’s audience. The Marvels skewed guys at 63% with men over 25 the biggest turnout at 45% and women over 25 at 24%. That latter demo gave the best recommendation grades of any demo at 61%.

Social media discussions reveal mixed sentiments, leaning toward discontent and expressing concerns about superhero fatigue, comparing the film to Marvel titles from the last decade and lamenting the absence of The Avengers.

The movie’s social media presence, per RelishMix, stands at 599 million views across platforms, 14% below norms for superhero titles. Additionally, Sony/Affirm’s Journey to Bethlehem, a faith-based musical, earned $250,000 in previews and is expected to have a modest opening in the low single digits.

Despite all the circumstances fans are still excited for the Marvels to watch on the big screen as it is releasing today.
