Following the BBC’s recent announcement that Top Gear will be on pause for the foreseeable future.
Former presenter James May has weighed in on the future of the iconic automotive show. May, who co-hosted the program alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond for over a decade, expressed his belief that the series requires a substantial rethink.
May candidly stated, “My honest view is I can say this now it does need a bit of a rethink. It’s time for a new format and a new approach to the subject because the subject has not been this interesting, I suspect, since the car has been invented.”
According to Variety, Flintoff, a member of the Top Gear trio since 2019, was injured during production, leading to the official suspension of the series. May expressed his concern for Flintoff, acknowledging the severity of the accident, stating, “I’ve only met Freddie once or twice, but it’s obviously more serious than we all thought.”
May’s call for a revamp echoes his experience in 2015 when he and Hammond departed the series after Clarkson’s dismissal for an incident with a producer. The trio then reunited to host The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime Video.
Finally, Top Gear has been laid to rest in the aftermath of the Flintoff crash and won’t be returning ever again.
