For fans of the ‘Yellowstoneverse’ 2022 has been a good year. Earlier this year the popular streaming giant Paramount+ announced that they would be expanding the Dutton family universe by not only adding new episodes to the insanely popular prequel ‘1883’ but also releasing a new era from their history in a new series named 1923.
Plot of 1923
According to the official synopsis released by Paramount+ in May the show “Will introduce a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early twentieth century when pandemics historic drought the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west and the Duttons who call it home.”
So if you enjoy watching content based on historical events you know Taylor Sheridan won’t disappoint you with the show because although other information about the storyline has been scarce we can safely assume from snippets in the trailer that the audience will get to watch the Dutton family fight for their survival amid the economic chaos after the world war I. It is also being speculated that a historical figure or two will feature in the upcoming series.
How Is 1923 a Part of Yellowstone and 1883?
Along with 1883 and the impending 6666 the upcoming series is part of the mysterious Yellowstone franchise on American television. It is a new chapter in what fans refer to as the Yellowstoneverse. The audience will notice many interconnected stories and references to 1883 and Yellowstone making it even more compelling viewing.
The leading character and head of the ranch in 1923 Jacob Dutton is also shown to be the brother of James Dutton whose character is featured in the series 1883 making it easier for the audience to connect both shows.
Why Was the Title of the Series Changed?
The show was initially named ‘1932’ but a name change was later announced so that the aftermath of world war I could be better included in the storyline. The great depression droughts famine and other events that took place in the early years after the war are shown to have a great impact on the Dutton family as evidenced by the flashback scenes in the trailer where Spencer Dutton is shown to be reminiscing about his time at the battlefield.
The Cast
Some of the biggest names heading the cast include the legendary Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Ford will play Jacob Dutton brother of James Dutton featured in the series 1883′ while Mirren will play the monarch’s wife and leading lady Cara Dutton. The duo established their chemistry when they worked in ‘the mosquito coast’ together so the audience has been buzzing with the excitement of seeing them together again.
James Badge Dale Marley Shelton Darren Mann and the Game of Thrones famed Jerome Flynn also reportedly play major roles in the show so it’s safe to say that the show’s cast is stacked with wonderful actors. Jerome Flynn might play a local leader and a possible antagonist in the story.

In an interview with vanity fair Mirren opened up about the character of Cara Dutton and said “I see Cara as an immigrant. One of the things I very strongly wanted was that she would speak with an Irish accent not with an American accent. It’s always slightly annoying with Westerns that you have all these people speaking with modern American accents when so many of them were fairly recent immigrants.”
Ford also talked about the relationship dynamics between Cara and Jacob Dutton saying “These are two people with a very strong bond to each other who are facing complicated circumstances. Their lives are wrapped up in each other. There’s very little that sustains them other than themselves and the hard work and investment they put into their future and family. It is a tough life and it’s full of not just physical challenges but moral ones as well.”
How Many Seasons Will the Show Have?
Nothing has been released officially but according to media reports the show’s second season is already underway with negotiations with the cast.
When Will The Show Premiere?
1923 originally 1932 is set to release its first episode on 18th December 2022 across the streaming platform Paramount+ just in time for the long holiday weekend.
