Oppenheimer Struggles to Beat Barbie at Box Office

Barbie dealt a massive blow to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in the box office battle shortly after their releases.

Even though Oppenheimer’s movie received excellent reviews and surpassed Barbie in terms of critical ratings with an almost perfect Rotten Tomato score, Barbie, featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is predicted to earn twice as much money at the box office compared to the biopic starring Cillian Murphy.

But surprisingly, both movies have exceeded their predicted success by a large margin, suggesting that maybe people are getting bored with sequels and superhero movies.

Initially, Barbie was expected to make $110 million during its first weekend at the US box office, while Oppenheimer was projected to earn around $50 million in total. However, surprisingly, Barbie is now heading towards a whopping $150 million, and Oppenheimer is anticipated to reach $75 million in box office earnings.

William Hill spokesperson, Lee Phelps, stated: “Barbie and Oppenheimer have seen more hype than most movies in recent years and we can see them both being smash hits as we make Barbie 4-9 to gross over $100 million on its opening weekend with Oppenheimer at 4-7 to gross over $50 million in the same period.”

Oppenheimer is a movie that narrates the tale of J Robert Oppenheimer, who was chosen by Lt Gen Leslie Groves portrayed by Matt Damon in World War II to be part of the secret Manhattan Project.

In Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the story revolves around Robbie’s beautiful Barbie and Ken (played by Ryan Gosling), as they decide to leave Barbie World and venture into the human world.

The competition between the two movies, playfully called “Barbenheimer” by people on social media, might have one film leading in box office earnings during its opening weekend. However, when it comes to potential awards, the situation could be entirely different.

The movie Oppenheimer is considered a strong contender for winning Oscars, with odds of 3-1 in its favor. On the other hand, Barbie is not expected to be among the favorites for the Best Picture award, with odds of 14-1 against its chances.
