Mason Mount: Chelsea reject second bid worth £50m from Manchester United with negotiations continuing

Chelsea has turned down Manchester United’s £50 million bid for Mason Mount. Making it the second rejected offer from Erik ten Hag’s team. Mount, who has one year remaining on his contract with Chelsea, is unlikely to sign a new deal. The second bid, valued at £50 million, consisted of £45 million guaranteed and an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons.

Erik ten Hag first encountered Mount during his tenure as Ajax head coach. Mount was on loan at Vitesse Arnhem when his free-kick led to the team’s third goal in a 3-2 victory over Ajax in March 2018. Given Mount’s reluctance to sign a new contract, it appears improbable that he will stay at Stamford Bridge. Recognizing the opportunity to capitalize on a player with just one year left on his contract. Chelsea may be willing to sell.
It seems that Ten Hag could be on the verge of securing Mount’s services. In fact, during Ten Hag’s eighth game in charge at Ajax, there were reportedly attempts to sign Mount on loan from Chelsea for the following season. Mount’s impressive performances, contributing 14 goals and 10 assists primarily from central midfield, had caught Ten Hag’s attention.

During England’s national team duty earlier this month, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw was asked directly about the possibility of Mount joining his club. Shaw, along with England manager Gareth Southgate. Joked about players “tapping up” each other during the international break, which coincides with the opening of the transfer window in June. Shaw humorously mentioned that he has engaged in banter with Mount and other players regarding potential moves.
“I’m not too sure what goes on behind the scenes, it’s to do with the club really. But of course when we are here, we are always together and we have a joke about it. But I don’t really know what’s going on.”
