Martin Scorsese Urges Salvation of Cinema

In an exclusive GQ interview, Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese issued a passionate plea to ‘save cinema.’ Reflecting on his illustrious career since his debut film in 1967, Scorsese expressed concern over the dominance of Hollywood blockbusters, emphasizing the need for more original storytelling.

This stance isn’t new for Scorsese, who belongs to a cohort of directors skeptical of superhero films. He’s previously likened them to ‘theme parks’ and, while acknowledging personal taste, he remains apprehensive about their cultural impact.

As Marvel productions continue to multiply and studios lean heavily on established IPs, Scorsese voices growing apprehension about the trajectory of film. ‘The danger there is what it’s doing to our culture,’ he warned, cautioning that future generations might equate movies solely with such spectacles.

Pressed on whether attitudes are evolving due to the inundation of superhero and franchise content, Scorsese shared his thoughts:

Martin Scorsese

“They already think that. Which means that we have to then fight back stronger. And it’s got to come from the grassroots level. It’s gotta come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean? And hit ’em from all sides. Hit ’em from all sides, and don’t give up. Let’s see what you got. Go out there and do it. Go reinvent. Don’t complain about it. But it’s true, because we’ve got to save cinema. I do think that the manufactured content isn’t really cinema.”
