Greta Gerwig’s Bold Statement Post for Women #MeToo
Greta Gerwig’s first movie as a director, Lady Bird (2017), came out at a time when stories of women facing abuse from powerful men were getting a lot of attention in the culture.
The #MeToo movement made the entertainment industry think about diversity, equality, and women’s roles in movies and behind the scenes. During that time, Greta Gerwig, a female filmmaker, became a symbol of the #MeToo/Times Up movement and actively participated in it.
Greta Gerwig’s first movie as a director, Lady Bird (2017), came out during a crucial time for feminism, known as the #MeToo movement.
The press asked Gerwig, a visible female Barbie filmmaker, to respond to #MeToo allegations, even though she felt somewhat removed from its epicenter.
Gerwig’s movie themes often focus on the experiences and challenges faced by women of her generation.
Gerwig also talked about working with Woody Allen during the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements in Hollywood.
In an interview with The New York Times, Gerwig, who worked on Woody Allen’s movie To Rome With Love in 2012, discussed the Woody Allen question.
‘I can only speak for myself and what I’ve come to is this: If I had known then what I know now, I would not have acted in the film.’ Gerwig says.
She also mentioned that she won’t work with him again and raised Dylan Farrow’s accusation against Allen, he has never faced conviction for child sex abuse, which is important to note.
It’s hard to tell how much women in Hollywood have become empowered after #MeToo. Gerwig says, “but the visibility of women and their transactional power is shifting”.
“In this new landscape, what has definitely changed is the studios… there’s a very big deliberate effort to hire more women and it no longer seems acceptable to have a slate of films, none of which are directed by a woman for wide studio release,” Gerwig says.
