Canada defeats Great Britain by a tournament record 18-8 in the World Baseball Classic

After losing to the USA in their World Baseball Classic debut, Great Britain contributed to a tournament record on Sunday.

On Saturday, the defending champions defeated Britain 6-2 in Pool C before facing Canada in the next match.

The 26 runs scored by the two teams combined for a tournament record in a single game, which Canada won 18-8.

All Pool C matches will take place at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, and feature Britain as well as Colombia and Mexico.

In addition, Canada’s total tied the tournament record for most runs scored by a single team, giving them a victory under the mercy rule after seven innings.

Britain took a 1-0 lead after Trayce Thompson’s first-inning home run against the US in their tournament debut before the strong hosts took control.

Prior to D’Shawn Knowles’ run in the seventh inning, off Anfernee Seymour’s groundout, the US had a 6-1 lead thanks to Nolan Arenado’s three hits and a three-run home run from Kyle Schwarber.

It was an impressive accomplishment in and of itself for the British team to make it to what is essentially the sport’s world cup.

The value of qualifying for the competition is six times the governing body of Great Britain’s yearly revenue.

A combination of international players with British or Caribbean ancestry and UK-born talent who have emigrated make up the 30-man roster.

The most well-known member of the group is probably LA Dodgers outfielder Thompson. In honour of his historic first run for Great Britain, his teammates dressed him in a robe and crown.

Great Britain manager Drew Spencer said, “We were excited, that’s a great moment for us”.

On Monday at 19:00 GMT, Great Britain will play their third World Baseball Classic game against Colombia.
