Fox is likely to announce that the Emmy awards will be moved to January next year because of the ongoing writers and actors strikes in Hollywood.
On Thursday, Variety reported that vendors for the ceremony were told about a forthcoming date change, but the exact date was not disclosed. The Los Angeles Times, citing an anonymous source familiar with the plans, stated that Fox was considering moving the telecast date to January.
The Emmys, which are the most prestigious awards in television, were initially scheduled to be shown on September 18. The LA Times mentioned that the possible January 2024 date depends on resolving conflicts between the studios and guilds before that time.
Earlier this month, Hollywood actors went on strike after negotiations with studios failed. This added to the ongoing strike of film and television writers, which started in May, causing disruptions to numerous shows and movies.
In the event that the Emmys are delayed, it will mark the first time since 2001. Back then, due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the following US military actions, the ceremony was moved to November, and a smaller Emmy telecast was held.
The Emmy nominations for this year were revealed two weeks ago, highlighting shows like Succession, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and Ted Lasso as top contenders. However, this announcement came just 48 hours before the decision to declare a dual work stoppage in Hollywood.
The ongoing strikes are likely to impact the Creative Arts Emmys, an event that celebrates the artistic and technical accomplishments in television. The ceremony was initially scheduled for 9 and 10 September.
As mentioned by Variety before, there is a previous instance of moving the Emmys to November: In 2001, the Emmy date was rescheduled due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and subsequent military action in Afghanistan. The telecast was held in November in a smaller venue, the now-demolished Schubert Theatre in Century City.
