CBS Making a Barbie vs Bratz Series, Based on ‘You Don’t Own Me’ Book
CBS Studios announced the acquisition of You Don’t Own Me: How Mattel V. MGA Entertainment Exposed Barbie’s Dark Side, a 2017 book by Orly Lobel.
The adaptation of You Don’t Own Me is intended to be a scripted series, although no platform or network has been assigned. Deadline reports, CBS acquired the rights before to Barbie’s debut and the ongoing WGA strike.
You Don’t Own Me delves into the dark side of the doll wars, set against Barbie’s cultural revolution, the inevitable reaction, and the cutthroat, high-stakes world of toys. It follows Handler and Bryant, the brilliant, troubled designers of Barbie and Bratz – two archetypal outsiders who make dolls that literally transform the world while nearly destroying themselves.
Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s pink-coated movie, has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, including $459 million in North America and $572 million abroad.
