James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel Avatar: The Way of Water has a $350M – $400M production budget.
Cameron’s sequel will be released in theatres throughout the world. Avatar made history 13 years ago when it became the highest-grossing picture of all time at the global box office, a title it still holds today with more than $2.92 billion in ticket sales.
The production budget for The Way of Water is one of the most expensive in Hollywood history.
The last time a movie to surpass a $400 million budget was Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The numerous filming locations, the use of 3D cameras comparable to those used on Avatar, and a total of 10 firms working on the elaborate visual effects all contributed to the film’s high cost. The film was the third highest-grossing film of 2011.
Of course, just because a film has a large budget does not mean that it will generate a good profit or that it will be a well-crafted and engaging tale.
Disney, for example, invests millions in every of its projects, yet the studio nevertheless has box office failures every now and then.
The sequel features the return of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver, along with young actors.
The movie will release in theatres on 15 December.
