The Cakemaker director’s new film ‘America’ trailer released

Graizer’s student film “A Prayer in January” was his break-out success. It was invited to 20 film festivals and was distributed by Edition Salzgeber. After graduation, Graizer wrote, directed, and produced several more short films that were screened at Cannes, Clermond Ferrand, Max Ophüls, and more.

Ofir Raul Graizer (“The Cakemaker” director) “America,” which will have its international premiere at the Crystal Globe Competition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, has launched its trailer. World sales are handled by Beta Cinema.
Eli, an Israeli swimming instructor who lives in the US, is the movie’s main character. He hasn’t spoken to his father in a while, then dad receives a call informing him that he has passed away. Eli unwillingly makes his first trip to Tel Aviv in ten years to handle the estate. He makes the decision to stop by Yotam, a childhood friend who used to go swimming with Eli when they were younger, on his brief trip. Yotam, though, stopped swimming a long time ago.

Graizer says: “For me, the core of the story is a strong and almost metaphysical friendship or companionship. But I believe and hope everyone who watches it will find something else because it tells different stories. It’s about life-changing abruptly, our dreams and aspiration suddenly adjusting to a new reality that forces us to deal with our past and re-think our place in the world. It’s a story about finding or rediscovering the term ‘home.’ It’s also a coming-of-age story. It deals with childhood, guilt, sacrifice, and the power of healing and regrowth. It’s also about the choice between the one we love and the one we desire.”

“America” will be distributed in Israel by Nachshon Films and in the Czech Republic by Mimesis Film.

Together with his fiancee Iris, who is also out of contact with her family, he owns a flower business in Jaffa. Eli will start a chain of events that will have an impact on everyone’s lives when he visits the two.
Graizer relocated to Berlin in 2009, when he began work on “The Cakemaker,” his debut movie. The proposal received the Nipkow Program award and invitations to various co-production markets, including Agora and the Berlinale. He and his producers made the decision to film “The Cakemaker” in Berlin and Jerusalem over the course of 21 days on a microbudget of 80,000 euros. Producer Itai Tamir, who has worked on the project with director Graizer since the beginning, was able to get funding for the final version of the movie based on the rough cut.

“The Cakemaker” was picked up and distributed internationally by Films Boutique. It received its world premiere and the Ecumenical Jury Award at Karlovy Vary in 2017. More than 100 festivals, including those in San Sebastian, Istanbul, and Palm Springs, were invited at that time.

The movie was theatrically released in 26 nations, including the United States, France, Germany, Japan, and Mexico. It received multiple honours, including seven Israeli Film Academy prizes, making it Israel’s official Oscar entry. The Cakemaker was later bought by Netflix in the United States. It was also optioned for a forthcoming Hollywood adaptation.
